Etymology of the English word’Corona’

The talk of the world all around now is about the deadly ‘Corona’virus. This is the right time to discuss about the etymology of the word,’Corona’.
Let’s check out the popular https://www.etymonline.com/search?q=corona+ for the root.
corona (n.)
1650s, "a crown," from Latin corona "a crown, a garland," in ancient Rome especially "a crown or garland bestowed for distinguished military service," from suffixed form of PIE root *sker- (2) "to turn, bend."
With many extended senses in botany, anatomy, etc. A coronavirus (by 1969) is so called for the spikes that protrude from its membranes and resemble the tines of a crown or the corona of the sun.
borrowed from Latin corōna "garland worn on the head as a mark of honor or emblem of majesty, halo around a celestial body, top part of an entablature"
Now,we find that this root is not acceptable for the following obvious reasons:
This word has come into use only by A.D.1650.That leads to the question,’Was there no coronations before A.D.1650?If so,what was the word used for it?
The attributed meaning of the word is ‘Garland/wreath’ .There’s no history of any Roman/Greek king ever wearing a garland on his head for coronation .Though flower crowns were worn by Greeks/Romans,there’s not a single image of any king wearing flower crown found in Google search. This leads one to doubt the etymology claimed.
Even in Olympic games laurel leaf crown was awarded to winners.
The Latin root does not have any related Latin words.
Then, what’s the etymology of the word,’Corona’?
In ancient times, king does not wear a crown just like that.It was an elaborate process with a defined order of ceremonial procedures.Apart from common people, the Ministers, the nobility, the Army, the High Priest etc.all assembled to witness and celebrate the King being crowned.Festoons were hung all over the town to mark the celebration. This order of celebration is called ‘Thoranai’ தோரணை in the oldest surviving language of the world Tamil.
So,Thoranai means ‘the order of King’s ascension to power’.’Thoranai’includes wearing a ‘crown’ as well as hanging what is called ‘Thoranam’(festoons) all over. This ‘Thoranam’ is a festoon of mango leaves ,as shown below.

According to agarathi.com:

University of Madras Lexicon

தோரணை

tōraṇai   n. id. Order, arrangement, method, plan, as of a discourse; முறை

Miron Winslow - A Comprehensive Tamil and English Dictionary

தோரணம்

tōraṇam
s. Cords hung with gar lands, palm-leaves, &c., or cloth hung up to adorn a road, in honor of an idol, or great person; or to garnish a house for a festivity; or the parts about a temple for an annual ceremony, &c., மகரிகை. 2. An outward door, a porch or ornamented geteway, சித்திரகோபுரவாயில்(c.) 3. A mound raised near a bathing place for a mark, நீராடுமிடத்திற்கட்டும்வரம்பு. W. p. 386. TORAN'A. 4. (R.) The beam of a balance, தராசுதாங்கி.
தோரணக்கல்s. A stone pillar errect ed in a large tank to show the height of the water, நீராழம்அறியுங்கல்.
தோரணக்கால்--தோரணக்கம்பம்s. Pots supporting garlands, &c. See under கால்.
தோரணங்கட்ட-தோரணந்தூக்க--தோ ரணம்போடinf. To make lines and deco rations as ornaments, &c. 2. To hang up a string of mango leaves over the door of a temple, or across the road, as an suspicious sight.
தோரணதீபம்--தோரணவிளக்குs. Torches in a row used at temple pro cession, made of rolls of cloth dipped in oil and hung by wires to a pole extending across the street, உற்சவவிளக்கு.
தோரணவாயில்s. A porch, portico, lodge, &c., நுழைவாயில்.

So,’Thoranai’ in Tamil means’order of King’s ascension to power’ and ‘Thoranam’means ‘festoons of mango leaves hung all over for celebration’.In course of time, the meaning has corrupted into ‘crown/flower garland’etc. The words are Tamil as proved by the presence of collateral or related words listed above.
The line of derivation of the word Latin/English word ‘Corona’is:
Tamil Thoranai>Thorana>Corona
Tamil Thoranam>Thorana>Corona
Unlike the English word which is just a few hundred years old,the Tamil root word is more than 2000 years old.

The genetic link between Tamil and PIE/Greek/Latin/English is well established already by the research book Proto-Indo-European Language-Face Unveiled ! (Notion Press-2017) By Alvaro Hans https://www.amazon.com/dp/1948096323/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1511490750&sr=8-11&keywords=proto+indo+european

The book establishes that all words relating to royalty in most languages of the world have their root in Tamil word ‘Rasa’ for King.Hence,it's not a surprise that the word for coronation also comes from Tamil roots.

'கொரோனா 'என்ற சொல்லின் சொல்லப்படும்  வேர் !
'கொரோனா 'என்ற சொல்லின் வேர் என்ன என்று தற்போது சொல்லப்படுகிறது ?
https://www.etymonline.com/search?q=corona+  என்ற ஆங்கில வேர்ச்சொல் அகராதி இவ்வாறாக சொல்கிறது :
corona (n.)

1650s, "a crown," from Latin corona "a crown, a garland," in ancient Rome especially "a crown or garland bestowed for distinguished military service," from suffixed form of PIE root *sker- (2) "to turn, bend."

borrowed from Latin corōna "garland worn on the head as a mark of honor or emblem of majesty, halo around a celestial body, top part of an entablature"

QUOTE :
8.COMMON WORD -‘Jesus ’ in English(En) & ‘Eesan’ in X Language(XL)
Etymology of Jesus’(En):
Online Etymology Dictionary
The word 'Jesus' according to Online Etymology Dictionary means "personal name of the Christian Savior, late 12c.; it is the Greek form of Joshua, used variously in translations of the Bible. From Late Latin Iesus (properly pronounced as three syllables), from Greek Iesous, which is an attempt to render into Greek the Aramaic proper name Jeshua (Hebrew Yeshua, Yoshua) "Jah is salvation." This was a common Jewish personal name during the Hellenizing period; it is the later form of Hebrew Yehoshua (see Joshua).
Old English used hælend "savior." The common Middle English form was Jesu/Iesu, from the Old French objective case form, from Latin oblique form Iesu (genitive, dative, ablative, vocative), surviving in some invocations. As an oath, attested from late 14c. For Jesus H. Christ (1924), see I.H.S. First record of Jesus freak is from 1970."
The web site ‘Meaning, origin and history of the name Jesus’ provides the 'related names in other languages' as under:
Yeshua (Ancient Aramaic), Essa, Isa, Issa, Yushua (Arabic), Josu (Basque), Iesous (Biblical Greek), Yehoshua, Yeshua (Biblical Hebrew), Iesus, Iosue (Biblical Latin), Jozua (Dutch), Joshua (English),Josué (French), Xesús (Galician), Iokua (Hawaiian), Yehoshua (Hebrew), Józsua (Hungarian), Giosuè (Italian), Josué (Portuguese),Jesús, Josué, Chucho, Chus, Chuy (Spanish), İsa (Turkish)”
Comments:
The etymology is rooted in Greek/Latin word’Iesus’ without a clear and acceptable meaning.
Etymology of Eesan’(XL):
In XL ,the word 'Jesus' becomes 'Yesu' as it becomes in Greek also.'Esan' ஈசன்  is 'God' in XL.
Miron Winslow -  Dictionary provides the following meaning for 'Eesan'
"s. The Divine Being, கட வுள். 2. Siva, சிவன். 3. A king, an emperor, a superior, a ruler, a master, அரசன். Wils. p. 135. EESA. 4. A senior, an elder, an aged person, மூத்தோன். 5. A priest, குரு. 6. Vishnu, விட்டுணு. 7. Brah ma, பிரமன். 8. The lord of the universe,எப்பொருட்குமிறைவன். (p.) 9. The கௌரி பாஷாணம்."
XL word'Yesathavar'
More over 'Yesathavar' in XL means ' blemish less' vide:
J.P.Fabricius XL and English Dictionary
"III. v. t. abuse, reproach, insult, இகழு; 2. hurl, dart, செலுத்து.
ஏசாதவர், (ஏசு+, negative +) the irreprochable, gods; 2. the unimpeachable, the good (நல்லார்).”
Comments:
So the word 'Jesus' is clearly linked to Tamil 'Eesan/Yesathavar' which means 'God' or‘blemishless’ respectively. The ownership of the word is clearly of  XL as proved by the presence of root, meaning and related words.

Etymology of English word 'Money'

Please click on link
https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-etymology-of-English-word-money/answer/Athi-S-Sundar

Most of us think that Greek is a Indo-European Language and Tamil is a Dravidian language and so they are not related at all ! Nothing can be far from truth than this inference. My 15 years of research into the possible genetic link between Greek and Tamil has proved it beyond doubt. I think language classifications are not as sacrosanct as we think and we can jump over walls to find truths.
Greek Tamil Historical Links
Before that ,a little of historical background may help. The Greeks and Romans were well known to Tamils during the BC era.Apart from extensive literary references, archaeological finds of Roman gold coins at Kalaiyamputhur in Tamil Nadu State of India attests to this fact. They were called by a common term ‘Yavanars’in Tamil.Since these travelers commenced their voyages from the Ionian Sea ,they were named ‘Ionavars’in Tamil. The etymology goes like this Ionia>Ionavar>Yavanar. In those days foreign traders camped for months in India for trade purposes, developed matrimonial links and mixed with the local populace freely.References of Greeks guarding the fort of Madurai town is also available,in Tamil texts. Thus the interaction was not for short periods and was not limited to trade purposes only.
However I would hasten to add that this intensive interactions would not have resulted in exchange of any basic ‘words’ between the languages, except words of trade. The reason is that the words we discuss date back to much earlier periods and suggests more of genetic links.
Many words found in Greek have clear links with Tamil .Please read my blog for more in this regard.Greek and Tamil
There are many more in this line.
The word 'cash' is also from Tamil 'kasu' which means 'coin' .'Money' is derived from 'mani' pronounced as 'money' in the Tamil word 'maniyakkaran'மணியக்காரன் which means 'temple tax collector'.The word is used even now for village tax collectors in Tamil Nadu,India.

Etymology of Latin word 'pudenda'

Wictionary provides the following etymology for the word ‘Pudenda’
“From Latin pudenda (“that where of one ought to feel shame”), substantive use of the neuter plural gerundive of pudet (“it shames”); in Latin the usage in the plural form (to mean external genitalia), was far more common than the singular form, as is also the case in English.”
The Tamil root ‘Pundai’
The Tamil ‘offensive’ word for female genitals is ‘Pundai ‘ and is used even now in villages during quarrels. This word breaks into ‘Punar+Udai’ which means ‘Tube/sheath for intercourse’ .This is the root of Latin word ‘Pudenda ‘
Strong ‘sound correspondence’
One of the pointers to the veracity of the root word is the ‘sound correspondence’ observed between the words referred to. The Tamil word’Pundai’ and the Latin word ‘Pudenda’ has strong ‘sound correspondence’ which again strengthens the inference.
Usage Pattern
The Tamil word ‘Pundai’ is also used as an ‘offensive ‘ word as in English.
Conclusion

So it is clear that Tamil word ‘Pundai’ is the credible etymon of the Latin word ‘Pudenda’ .

Etymology of Greek word ' PALEO'

We all think Greek is a Indo-European Language and Tamil is a Dravidian language and so they are not related at all !My 15 years of research into the possible genetic link between Greek and Tamil has proved it otherwise. I think language classifications are not as sacrosanct as we think and we can jump over walls to find truths .Here is my paper on the link between Greek word 'Paleo' and Tamil word 'Pazhaya' ,published in Linguist List in 2003 .
